USB stands for Universal Serial Bus. It is a serial bus standard connecting computer systems and external devices, as well as a technical specification of input and output interfaces. It is widely used in information and communication products such as computers and mobile devices, and extended to photography equipment, digital TELEVISION (set top boxes), game consoles, and other related fields.
Currently, USB supports five data signal rates, and the most common ones used on Android boxes are USB2.0 and USB3.0. Everyone knows USB 3.0 is a 2.0 upgraded version, but what’s the difference?
- USB 2.0 devices have a maximum transfer speed of 480 Mbps, but USB 3.0 has a data transfer rate of 5.0Gbps, which is about 10 times faster than the USB 2.0 standard. Although USB2.0 data transfer is a bit slow compared to USD3.0, it is fast enough to connect peripherals such as keyboards, mice, or headphones.
- USB 2.0 connectors are white or black on the inside, while USB 3.0 sockets are usually blue and downwardly compatible with USB 2.0 and USB 1. x.
- USB 2.0 has four connector cables, supporting half-duplex communication. However, USB 3.0 introduced full-duplex transmission, which has a total of nine connector wires. With these five extra wires, it increases USB 3.0’s bandwidth by allowing simultaneous two-way communication.
- USB 2.0 provides up to 500 mA, while USB 3.0 provides up to 900 mA, increasing the total power from 2.5W to 4.5W (at 5 V).
- With the above improvements, the prices of USB2.0 TV boxes and USB3.0 TV boxes are also different. Of course, many existing boxes have both USB2.0 and USB3.0.

Note: Though USB 2.0 can be used with USB 3.0 ports, the transfer speed will fall back to USB 2.0 speeds, so you won’t get a very high transfer speed.
